To make sure you get all the nutrients and other substances you need for health, build a healthy base by using the Food Guide Pyramid as a starting point. Very small amounts once or twice a week maximum is sufficient. This includes lactose-free and lactose-reduced milk products. Separate raw, cooked, and ready-to-eat foods while shopping, preparing, or storing. However, we also need to keep and prepare foods safely in the home, and be alert when eating out. Fruits and vegetables, especially dry beans and peas, also contain fiber and other substances that are associated with good health.
